One Day by David Nicholls

David Nicholls’ bestselling novel One Day is a startlingly real story told with exquisite humour, depth and compassion.

Synopsis:

‘I can imagine you at forty,’ she said, a hint of malice in her voice. ‘I can picture it right now.’

He smiled without opening his eyes. ‘Go on then.’

15th July 1988. Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew meet for the first time on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow they must go their separate ways. So where will they be on this one day next year? And the year after that? And every year which follows?
One Day is a funny/sad love story spanning twenty years, a book about growing up – how we change, how we stay the same.

Opinion:

I love it. Nicholls totally nailed it! I cried, laughed and fell in love!! Impressive style of writing.  It’s been a long time since I have read a love story so carefully and realistically written. Readers will fall in and out of love, at a certain point on every character; but inevitably, they will stay in their minds and hearts. I love it!

The character of Emma Morley (Mayhem) is truly an inspiration. She’s independent, passionate and very brave. She’s the kind of girl that dresses very casually, but unbelievably smart. She is not the runway type, but men seem to fall in love with her easily. At a certain event in the story, she disappointed me though... when she established an immoral relationship with a married man, 15 yrs her senior. Nonetheless, I still love her.

Dexter Mayhem… what can I say? I say that his character is very-well crafted. Unbelievably loveable and charming. I started liking Dex when he decided to marry Sylvie Cope. Though I don’t like Sylvie for Dex, I believe that her contribution on Dex’s life somehow influenced him to become a responsible, healthy and dedicated man. I can say that he had been an amazing father, although his life had been almost a waste in his earlier years. His marriage to Sylvie altered his perception on life’s complexities. I guess, he deserves someone better than Sylvie. And thank God, Emma’s still in love with him.

This novel goes right into my Top 5 best love stories of all time. I love it!
